Day of Pink What will YOU be wearing? Sat, 20 Jan 2018 21:38:26 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Hon. Susan Sullivan, Minister of Education & Early Childhood Development, NLFD Tue, 09 Jun 2015 16:11:26 +0000 Susan Sullivan HS

On the Day of Pink I will proudly wear pink as a symbol of my support to stand against bullying, harassment, intimidation and disrespectful behaviour. As Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, I support any and all initiatives that encourage and promote safe, caring, respectful environments in our schools. Uniting together, we can create one voice to take action and end bullying and discriminatory behaviour, particularly related to homophobia and transphobia.

Bullying has, sadly, been a part of the lives of too many children for far too long and the rise of social media has provided another avenue with the ability to spread it much further. The results for the victims are horrendous and sometimes catastrophic.

Thankfully, more and more are bravely speaking out to put an end to it.

Jer’s Vision plays a big part in that by shining a bright light on the battle against bullying, discrimination and homophobia. As youth standing shoulder to shoulder with your peers, your voice is strong and building every day.

I proudly add my name as a supporter of Day of Pink.

On behalf of City Council and the citizens of Edmonton, I’m proud to offer my support to the Day of Pink campaign. Bullying can have severely damaging impacts on children and its effects can last a lifetime. Both victims and aggressors are at risk of drug and alcohol abuse, depression and suicide. The City of Edmonton is committed to preventing these outcomes through early intervention and building on the strengths of our youth to create a safe, inclusive and welcoming city.

As The Queen’s representative in Manitoba, I am pleased to extend vice-regal greetings to the volunteers, board of directors, staff and friends of the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity as you host your annual Day of Pink Gala.

Every human being deserves dignity and respect. Each deserves to be valued for who they are, just as they are. We are fortunate to live in a country where people of many different cultures, backgrounds and experiences live together in harmony. The mutual respect and acceptance so common among Canadians strengthens our society and is admired around the world.

On the International Day of Pink, I encourage everyone to pause and remember the immeasurable value of inter-personal respect. We all deserve to live our lives in peace.

Most of us know someone who has faced bullying or discrimination at some point or another, if not experienced it ourselves. This kind of behavior has no place in our communities, and we must commit to being open minded, accepting differences and treating others with respect.

I would like to congratulate the team and volunteers of Jer’s Vision, now the new Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity, for their advocacy every single day and all those involved with the 10th annual Day of Pink gala for celebrating the community’s successes.

Everyone has an important role to play in putting an end to bullying. Whether it’s in our schools, workplaces or anywhere else, we cannot continue to tolerate homophobia, transphobia or any other form of discrimination. I will be wearing pink on April 8th as a symbol of my commitment towards ending discrimination and making our communities healthier places for everyone to live.

Every one of our NDP MLAs supported and helped pass Bill 18, Manitoba’s anti-bullying legislation, because it creates a safe and inclusive school environment for all students. Young people can’t reach their full potential if they feel threatened at school. Wear pink and stand up against bullying and cyberbullying.
